Welcome to October....time for weird, wacky posts about MINIS! Famed director Henry Selick, known for the movie 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' created the film 'Coraline'. The film depicts an adventurous girl finding an idealized parallel world behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that the alternate world contains a dark and sinister secret.
The special effects and stop action animation are brilliant. Three Victorian Dollhouses were used throughout the filming. Also, artist, Althea Crome ( work!) was hired specifically to knit miniature sweaters and other clothing for the puppet characters, sometimes using knitting needles as thin as human hair.
Another dollhouse to view in a movie for your October entertainment! For more October Stories visit my website:

Happy National Stupid Question Day!

Happy National Stupid Question Day! The roots of this special day go back to the 1980's. At the time, there was a movement by teachers to try to get kids to ask more questions in the classroom. Kids sometimes hold back, fearing their question is stupid, and asking it will result in ridicule.
I have had customers countless times begin a conversation with: "This may be a stupid question, but....."
I could be my Mum and say, "There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers", but I will take the high road and say:
Basic information is always needed when starting a hobby. In this wonderful world of MINIS ask-you will find very generous people willing to help you. In my career I have always appreciated the seasoned collector, the master builder and the newbie! One I admire, one I am in awe and one keeps my enthusiasm for all of this!
We have some great information pages on our site regarding all of the basics-wiring (my favorite), wallpapering, roofing, even a suggested list of glues for which project you are doing.
Check it all out!
Now for my 'stupid' question......What goes around the world but stays in a corner?

So Many Ideas!

I am sure I speak for many of you when I say I have a closet full of unfinished MINI projects. I don't know why things get left before they are complete; probably because there are simply so many ideas swirling in my head for projects that, depending on the mood of the day, is how I decide what gets worked on!
Well along with unfinished projects, I have a scrapbook of 'ideas to do' projects! I am re-posting this one because I simply love the idea of tucking miniature surprises among real life. I believe miniatures are used to entertain, provoke thoughts and/or represent a memory.
Whether simply for the surprise to the passer-by or for an entrance to the Fairy world, doors and windows with MINI scenes embedded in books is delightful!
If you decide to dust off an unfinished project, refresh a favorite one or start a new one, I would appreciate you considering stoping by the site for everything MINI you will need!

Free Libraries!

This Small House Tribute has a special place in my heart. My mother was an elementary school teacher and a lover of all things books! I have a degree in Literature and I hold a seat on our localLibrary Board. Two of my sister-in-laws have careers related to Libraries. That all being divulged on a personal level......
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Baltimore. My husband and I took an afternoon to stroll around the Little Italy neighborhood (found a great pizza place, thought we found a great bakery, but alas the girls behind the counter were too busy chatting to welcome us, so we left :( ).Tucked in front of a random building was a delightful house on a pole. I thought maybe a bird house until I looked closer. It was a Free Library filled with Children's books!
In 2009 Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, built a model of a one room schoolhouse. It was a tribute to his mother; she was a teacher who loved to read. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His neighbors and friends loved it. He built several more and gave them away. Each one had a sign that said FREE BOOKS. The movement has spread. The houses are simple to complex. Just another example of how our passion for miniature houses spreads to other walks of life! To read about these delightful 'houses' visit:

The Emmy Award Goes To.....

The TV Emmy Awards coming up next month. We all root for our favorite shows to win. I think there should be an award for 'Best Dollhouse Featured In A TV Show'! Hands down my winner would definitely go to Phoebe's creation in the Friends episode Monica inherits a dollhouse that as a child, she was never allowed to touch. Uptight Monica is unnerved with Phoebe's way she plays with the elegant dollhouse.
You can find several clips on YouTube of this episode that shows both Monica's and Phoebe's Dollhouse. They are fun to watch!
So, which type of dollhouse lover are you? Phoebe? or Monica? Me- I side with Phoebe-I appreciate perfection, but I admire whimsy! I loved Phoebe saying, "Come, dinosaur, we're not welcome at the house of no imagination."
Stop by the site today to shop for 'perfect' MINIS and 'whimsical' MINIS!

End of Summer

Just a bit of this and that: It is MID August! School has started for some and soon for others (I got the cutest picture last night of my great niece starting first grade); the garden is abundant with tomatoes but has that bedraggled end of the season brown look; I wish I could say there is a little chill at night-but, with temperatures in the 90's every day that doesn't look like it is happening anytime soon; Pumpkin everything is showing up everywhere; and last but not least, these last few weeks of summer always seem to be the time we are forced to concentrate on so much more than our MINIS!
For me, it is the time for the annual Trade Show this coming weekend. A time for MINI retailers to see what the industry has new for our customers and to get wonderful hand crafted MINIS to tempt you with! This show pumps excitement into heading into the holiday season. I have my list of the things you asked me to search for, all of my own crafted products are ready to set up and I am ready to see friends and 'chat' MINIS!
Take a deep breath MINI friends; try to slow down and enjoy the final lazy days of summer! Take some time to concentrate on your MINIS.

Set Design

Todd Rosenthal's inspiration for this remarkable stage design, for the theater production of August: Osage County, was a dollhouse! If you think about it (if you are familiar with the story), a dollhouse setting is ideal for the disjointed, often surreal story of the dysfunctional family.
Yet another way our MINI world has influenced other genres of art! (yea, yea, I know my posts are all over the place, but I like to keep you interested!) ;) Don't forget FREE SHIPPING this weekend on your Dollhouse Miniature Orders! ~judy
